King Chavez

This project site is located on an existing 1.65-acre triangular shaped campus consisting of one permanent building and several portable classroom buildings. The site is relatively flat with the greatest grade difference being seven feet from the north corner to the southwest corner. The surrounding area consists of single-family residential neighborhood bordered by interstate-5 on the southwest side. The King Chavez Academy of Excellence site is a SDUSD-owned facility occupied by a charter under King Chavez Neighborhood of Schools focusing on bi-literacy and the arts. 

The whole site modernization project will replace all portable classrooms and existing administration building with two new 2-story classroom buildings, an administration building, food service modular building and a lunch shelter. This project also involves site improvements that will replace all existing hardscape and landscape areas. The project scope includes limited off-site improvements and no new curb-cuts or street parking modifications are planned in the design.

Construction shall be completed in 3 phases to allow the school to remain operational onsite throughout construction. Phase 1 includes construction of new 2-story classroom Building 300 on the southwest side of the site where existing play structure, hard-courts and lunch shelter currently exist, leaving some play areas intact for students during this phase.  Once Phase 1 is complete and operations can be transitioned into the new Building 300, Phase 2 will demolish the existing administration building and several portable classrooms to allow construction of the connected 2-story classroom Building 200 and administration Building 100. Construction of the new food service modular building and lunch shelter will also be incorporated into Phase 2. Lastly, phase 3 will demolish all remaining existing portable buildings on campus and complete the site work including hardcourts, play structures, turf and garden areas, and futsal/soccer pitch.
